Ram Villivalam

State Senator, 8th District

Ram believes we need a new generation of diverse leaders who listen to and represent their communities; he will be an effective, outspoken leader. He is passionate about addressing income inequality, starting with increasing the minimum wage to a $15 per hour. Ram is also advocates for single payer healthcare, protecting our environment, and stronger gun control regulations.

Ram Villivalam was born and raised on the Northwest side of Chicago, the community he is now running to represent. His parents immigrated to the United States from India in 1970. Professionals in their home country, they took minimum wage jobs to make ends meet while they raised a family, went back to school, and eventually worked as public servants for 25 years. Ram remembers the struggle his family went through and understands the importance of having a voice in our government that represents families facing that same struggle.

Ram has spent his professional career fighting for working families and championing progressive issues. For the past three years, Ram has worked for Service Employees International Union (SEIU), advocating to protect home care for seniors and people with disabilities, child care for working families, and Medicaid for those in need. Prior to that, Ram worked at the federal level, signing people up for the Affordable Care Act and organizing job fairs for people looking for work.
