Our Revolution Illinois works to end family separations
In light of the grave and systemic separation of families at the border, Our Revolution Illinois came together with a coalition of organizations to put an demand an end to Trump’s inhumane “zero-tolerance” policy.
In the words of Our Revolution Illinois board member, Ahlam Jbara, “Our message is we need to end family separations. We need to end family detentions. People think this is a Latino issue, but it’s not. Our broken immigration system has affected Latinos, Asians, Arabs, Africans, Muslims.”
While the contemporary tragedy of family separations requires immediate action, Our Revolution Illinois also connected this problem with the longstanding history of abuse and discrimination that immigrants have been facing in America for decades.
Our Revolution Illinois board member, Yesenia Mata, explains that “abolishing ICE is not about lawlessness or open borders but about upholding our constitutional principles of defending people’s freedom from big government, government overreach and racial discrimination. . . In a true American democracy, no human being is illegal.”
United with over 700 cities worldwide, over 60,000 Illinoisians walked in the Families Belong Together March in Chicago. Our Revolution Illinois is honored to have been deeply involved in the planning of this historic march, and will continue fighting for the rights, wellbeing, and prosperity of all immigrants.
